Forget the inch-per-gallon rule
The old "one inch of fish per gallon" rule breaks down quickly because a 3-inch goldfish produces many times the waste of three 1-inch tetras. What actually limits a 10 gallon tank is bioload (waste production), swimming space and territory. Small, slim-bodied schooling fish are the only category with real headroom in a tank this size; anything that grows past 5–6 cm as an adult is usually a poor long-term fit.
Stocking ideas that genuinely work
Proven 10 gallon setups include: a single betta with a few nerite snails or a small shrimp colony; 8–10 chili rasboras or ember tetras with cherry shrimp; 6 male-only Endler's livebearers with a nerite snail; or 6 pygmy corydoras with 6 small rasboras in a planted layout. Live plants raise the margin for error in a small tank—they consume waste, add oxygen and give shy fish cover.
Common choices that do not fit
Goldfish (any kind), common plecos, angelfish, mollies, most gouramis and "algae eater" catfish sold small all outgrow a 10 gallon tank—some within months. Neon tetras are borderline: they survive but are noticeably more active and colourful in a 60 cm tank. Two male bettas can never share a tank this size, and even a betta with fin-nipping tankmates usually ends badly.
Volume, not the label, is the real limit
Manufacturers rate tanks by gross geometric capacity. After a 4 cm gravel bed, rock, a filter and the air gap, a "10 gallon" often holds 8–9 real gallons. Measure your tank and calculate its true volume, then subtract 10–15% for displacement before deciding stock. Smaller water volume also means faster parameter swings, so a reliable heater, a gentle filter and weekly 30% water changes matter more here than in any big tank.
